Sheryl is the absent-minded comic relief of the office. Although not exceedingly great at her job, she comes at it from a place of warmth and compassion, getting invested personally in her clients’ lives. She’s a lovable loser who is neither lucky in love nor law but never lets her optimism and hopefulness be crushed by the almost constant failure that seems to plague her, even despite Nina’s coaching.
Maria Bamford stars as Cheryl, Nina’s (Eliza Coupe, “Happy Endings”) useless and empathetic co-worker in USA’S new comedy “Benched.”
Bamford was previously named one of the “50 Funniest People” by Rolling Stone magazine and was the winner of the 2014 American Comedy Award for Best Club Comic.
She recently recurred as Debris Bardeaux on the “Arrested Development” reboot, for which she was praised as “fantastic” (Entertainment Weekly) a “standout” (TIME) and “perhaps one of the high points of the entire new season” (Black Book Magazine). Additional credits include “Kroll Show” and “Louie.”
Bamford is the creator and star of the direct-to-fans event “Maria Bamford: the special special special,” which Vulture.com named one of the Top 10 Stand-Up Specials of 2012. She also created the cult hit web series “The Maria Bamford Show,” which screened at the Museum of Art and Design and was described as a “cold blast of brilliance” by The New Yorker.
She is the first female comic to have two half-hour specials; and she starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the series “The Comedians of Comedy” and “Comedians of Comedy: The Movie.” She has made numerous late-night appearances, most recently on “Conan” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. “
Bamford currently contributes comedic voiceovers for such animations as “Adventure Time,” “Word Girl,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “Legend of Korra,” and “Golan the Insatiable.” She was also a regular voice on “CatDog” and “Back at the Barnyard.”
